Some questions have been raised about yesterday’s shelter in place advisory affecting the Health Sciences Complex.
Yesterday’s advisory was issued by Memorial University through its Newsline service as the result of a weapons-related threat made at the new Mental Health and Addictions facility at around 12:45.
NLHS imposed restricted access at the Health Sciences Complex including the hospital, Janeway, Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, Mental Health Facility and Nuclear and Molecular Medicine that was in place until just before 2:00 p.m.
The situation was also announced on the Health Sciences Complex PA system advising of a Secure Building Protocol level 2, which imposes restricted access. The information was also shared with staff through a mass notification app.
During restricted access, the doors are closed and services continue for those already inside the facility and in emergency situations. The intent according to NLHS is to protect the safety of staff, physicians, patients and visitors.
The 40-year-old suspect, who was not in possession of a weapon, was arrested at his home. He’s now facing a charge of mischief.
