The provincial government says it has no plans to stop the flow of electricity to the United States in response to tariff threats.
Earlier this week, Manitoba announced it was freezing two contracts with Minnesota, equal to nearly a quarter of what this province sends south of the border.
NL Hydro exported 1830 gigawatt hours (GWh) to the U.S. in 2024, valued at over $87 million. It expects to export the same this year.
Minister Andrew Parsons says what they send to the U.S. is on the “spot market,” the demand for which changes hour by hour.
“We sell power to any number of people, including the United States, Ontario, New Brunswick, Quebec, you name it. So in this case, it’s not a decision that we’ve made whether to discontinue that practice. Right now, it’s not like there’s a contract in place. Try not to be too proactive or reactive, but knowing that it is something up the sleeve,” he told VOCM News.
