The FFAW is joining a long list of groups and politicians calling on Ottawa to intervene to speed up the removal of the Baltic III.
The troubled Baltic III ran aground in Lark Harbour nearly two months ago, and last week tar balls were found in the water near the ship.
The FFAW says the ship poses a threat to inshore fish harvesters who rely on the waters.
They say DFO should take charge of the removal process, which the union calls an “environmental catastrophe waiting to happen.”
Premier Andrew Furey has written a letter asking DFO to step in, saying it’s “crucial” to help save the fishery.
