Two drivers were arrested by Harbour Grace RCMP last week following a dramatic series of events, including a head-on collision that was narrowly avoided.
Police first responded to reports of a crash near Heart’s Desire just before 3:30 p.m. last Tuesday, but the driver left the scene in a separate vehicle.
The Mounties say they observed the vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed, in the oncoming lane, driving head-on towards a marked police cruiser.
Police swerved to avoid a collision.
A short time later the vehicle pulled into a driveway in Heart’s Content. Officers also pulled into the driveway to block the vehicle from leaving, but the suspect backed up—hitting the police car.
Both drivers were arrested at the scene.
The driver of the initial vehicle, a 26-year-old man, was found to be unlicensed and driving without insurance or registration. He is currently under investigation for multiple offences.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 23-year-old woman, showed signs of impairment and is awaiting the results of a drug evaluation to determine if charges of impaired are appropriate. She is also under investigation for flight from police, dangerous operation, and assault with a weapon.
Charges are anticipated.
