Canada – US relations have been at the fore of the federal election campaign, but a town hall being held tonight aims to put the spotlight on issues affecting the province’s youth, with a particular focus on green initiatives.
The event, dubbed a Just Transition Town Hall, is being organized by The Action Network as part of efforts for Earth Day.
Organizer Jude Benoit felt it was important for them to organize the event because they “fear for the future of the province” when it comes to jobs and industry.
Benoit says oil will not sustain the province forever, and the transition to green energy is something they are interested in.
Benoit says they hope each party is open to a just transition, and finding new ways to grow the economy.
They say they grew up in a generation of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who had to go away for work, and they are “extremely passionate” about the idea of having an economic climate where families don’t have to go away for work.
The event takes place this evening at 7:00 at St. John’s City Hall.
