Energy NL has written the three major federal parties seeking their responses to questions of importance to the province’s energy sector.
CEO Charlene Johnson says the Conservatives and New Democrats have both supplied responses which have been added to the Energy NL website for members, and the public, to see.
Energy NL says in summary, the NDP has indicated that critical minerals, wind and hydrogen, electrification and carbon capture, use and storage are among its key priority areas. The party will also pursue an East-West clean energy grid.
The Conservative party meanwhile has indicated that it plans to double oil production in Newfoundland and Labrador, eliminate the cap on greenhouse gas emissions, and cut Bill C-69.
Johnson says they’re still waiting on a formal response from the federal Liberal party.
“I like some of the things I’m hearing from the Conservatives,” says Johnson. “They answered all the questions with exactly what we wanted, and then some. But again, we’re hearing some positive signals from the Liberals too. Not as definitive as we would like to see, not specifically the emissions cap is gone, but I think there’s something there to work with.”
