Premier Andrew Furey says there will be so-called “no-fly zones” built into the MOU signed with New Brunswick yesterday on interprovincial trade.
The agreement was signed by Furey and New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt at Confederation Building in St. John’s.
Furey clarified that there will be exceptions for sectors critical to the economy of both provinces.
“We are not prepared to talk about minimum processing requirements (in the fishery), for example, that would be a death blow to Newfoundland and Labrador. We’re not interested in that, we’re not doing that, that is a position that is off-sides for us,” he said.
“Equally, I’m sure Premier Holt would not appreciate us taking all her lumber for Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, none of that makes sense, so there are ‘fl-fly’ zones on both sides.”
