Neighbours are once again calling for action from the city on a vacant and derelict property in Cowan Heights.
The property, at 24 Point Leamington Street, has been vacant for about 10 years, and Neil Peet says it’s an eyesore that needs to be addressed.
He says the house is open to the environment with starlings and squirrels nesting inside. “It’s overgrown, there’s a broken-down damaged patio that was towed out of the backyard, that’s in the driveway. It’s been there now about two years.” Peet says he and a number of neighbours have been lobbying the city for a few years and “we get all kinds of promises, but nothing happens.”
Ward councilor Greg Noseworthy says the city has a number of bylaws specific to property standards. He encourages residents concerned about derelict or unkempt properties to contact city hall.
He says some files take longer to resolve than others. “‘Cause lots of times there are circumstances that…can slow things down.” That includes properties that are caught up in estate disputes after a death, or some other kind of legal battle. “These things do happen from time-to-time, and unfortunately can slow things down, but the property standards bylaws, they still do apply, it’s just that it might a little bit longer for staff to effectively deal with the issues.”
