The world bade farewell to Pope Francis today, who will be the first Pope in more than a century to be interred outside the Vatican.
He rose to the Papacy in 2013, the first to choose the Papal name Francis.
Many people camped outside St. Peter’s Square last night in order to secure a spot in the square this morning. Canadians scattered among the tens of thousands in and around St. Peter’s Square for the funeral of Pope Francis described the ceremony as profoundly beautiful.
He was recognized as a man of peace and compassion, and once paid a visit to Canada, apologizing to Indigenous peoples in western Canada for the role the Catholic Church played in the residential school system.
Francis died Monday at age 88 and is being remembered as a pontiff dedicated to building bridges and offering compassion to marginalized groups during his 12-year papacy.
