The Mayor of Harbour Grace remains optimistic that the town’s beloved statue of Amelia Earhart will be returned to her rightful place.
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians shook their heads in disbelief over the bold theft of the famous aviator’s statue from the Spirit of Harbour Grace park last week.
The town, along with business and community partners, offered up a $25,000 reward for information leading to the statue’s return, and since then the tips have been pouring in.
Surprising to Mayor Don Coombs is that many people who have been reaching out, don’t want the reward, they just want to see the statue back.
All information has been passed on to RCMP.
He’s calling on the culprits to leave the statue in the woods so officials can retrieve it. Coombs says even if the statue is no longer intact, it can be salvaged, as long as all the pieces are there.
“What I’m hearing from my sources,” says Coombs, “is that the head, the legs and the arms have been cut off, I don’t know how, but the body is still there. So it’s six pieces.” He says he’s been talking to a sculptor who says “they can be put back together.” He says he’s disappointed with what he’s hearing, but he’s optimistic that, if true, the sculpture can be put back together.
