The Tories are shaking their heads over comments by government about what they view as another non-development regarding the construction of a new facility to house prisoners.
The current penitentiary, located on Forest Road in St. John’s, is a Victorian-era building. All associated with it are lobbying government to speed up the process.
The original plan was to have a new facility built by this year, but not a single sod has yet been turned.
Government is expected to give some type of update in a couple of weeks.
Opposition critic Barry Petten told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that it has been ten years of announcements with nothing to show for it.
The Conception Bay South MHA , who toured the facility about ten years ago, says the conditions were atrocious then and have gotten no better since.
“There are lots of announcements, but there no action,” said Petten.
