Everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador 50 years of age and over will be able to avail of the shingles vaccine, free of charge, starting September 1.
Currently, free coverage is restricted to those aged 65 to 70, and to those older who are immuno-compromised, however, government has secured a supply of vaccine to cover everyone who is at least 50 years of age.
The program will be phased-in, with people who are 65 and over eligible starting June 1st, as well as those between the ages of 50 and 64 and who immunocompromised. All others will be eligible starting September 1.
Health Minister Krista Lynn Howell, speaking at a news conference at Lane’s Retirement Home in St. John’s, said the increased access will further improve the health and well-being of those who avail of the vaccine. Government had allocated $8.5-million to cover the original group – those 65-70 and some people over the age of 70. She does not know how much additional money will be needed.
She says they will have a better idea after they see how many people take advantage of the program – perhaps about three months in.
