Premier John Hogan says he is willing to work together with members of the disability community on the creation of a disabilities advocate.
Hogan was responding to questions raised in the legislature by PC MHA Helen Conway Ottenheimer, in which she asked if the province would immediately create the position.
The premier says there was a review done of all statutory offices of the House of Assembly, and one of the recommendations of that was to broaden the role of the Seniors’ Advocate to include those with complex needs.
However, Hogan has since heard from members of the community who argue that that approach is not the right path to take.
“I don’t think we as a government should ever force something on the disability community that they don’t want. So now it’s time to continue to work with the disability community and have discussions with them about what that specific advocate’s office would look like.”
