The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says Canada Post is trying to “gigify” the labour force by trying to introduce part-time work.
A review commission report recommended that Canada Post should be more flexible in the use of part-time employees during the week and on weekends.
CUP-W NL President Michael McDonald says they don’t have an issue with that, but they do have an issue with what type of position Canada Post is trying to create.
“It’s a part-time position that’s only 4 hours a day, or 4 hours a week, and essentially that individual is mandated to stay for an 8 hour shift—if that’s the case, that’s a little bit different than what’s in our collective agreement,” thereby “gigifying” a job, so that it becomes “something you can’t live on.”
