Last year was an above-average year for hurricane activity, but Atlantic Canada saw well below the usual number of storms make their way into our neck of the woods.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre recently released its outlook for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
Last year was an above-average year for named storms, with 18 in total, mainly due to what meteorologist Bob Robichaud calls “near record” warm temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean.
Despite a lot of activity, Robichaud says only one storm entered the Canadian Hurricane Centre’s “response zone,” which was Hurricane Ernesto in August.
That number is “low” according to Robichaud, who explains that 35 to 40 per cent of storms in any given season usually make their way into the area, resulting in anywhere from 2-4 hurricanes or tropical storms.
He notes storms in the response area don’t necessarily have to have an impact on land.
