Justice Minister John Haggie says work is already underway to address many of the issues recently outlined in a report from the Policing Transformation Working Group.
The report, which was administered by Quality of Care NL, dives into issues of community safety, the role of the police, and how people feel about the effectiveness of the current system.
Haggie outlines several initiatives already underway to address people’s concerns.
He says government has met with the RCMP and RNC around community engagement and communication, and those entities are doing work to that effect.
As well, government recently brought in a new Law Enforcement Oversight Commission Act, which establishes a new procedure for complaints towards RNC Officers.
Haggie hints that there is also work happening around how crime stats are reported.
He hints they are working on better ways to communicate crime and crime trends by community, and says to “stay tuned” on that front.)
