A new morgue facility in St. John’s is now operational.
The health authority says the expanded facility offers a greater amount of space, privacy and safety features for staff, clinical teams and grieving families.
NL Health Services is responsible for overseeing unclaimed remains under revised legislation, an issue that came to the fore last year in alarming fashion when a number of freezer units had to be brought in to store unclaimed human remains.
The health authority this week launched a public website listing remains that have not been claimed. After five days with no response, NLHS has the authority to bury the remains in a dignified and respectful manner.
