The whooping cough outbreak in Newfoundland and Labrador has been declared over.
Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services made the decision with the Chief Medical Officer of Health following a “sustained decrease in cases.”
The health authority says since January 2024 there have been 361 confirmed cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, in the province, with 57,000 vaccines delivered through the outbreak period.
While the outbreak is over in this province, NLHS says other jurisdictions are continuing to see cases, and people are being encouraged to stay up-to-date on their vaccines.
Whooping cough vaccines are part of the routine immunization schedule for children/teens, those who are pregnant, and adults 10 years after their last vaccine.
People can book a vaccine and check their immunization status by contacting their local public health office.
