Inflation held steady across Canada in May at 1.7 per cent but in Newfoundland and Labrador, it was 0.5 per cent, up slightly from April (0.4.)
Statistics Canada says slower increases in the cost of mortgages and rent were big factors in keeping inflation steady.
However, the cost of a new vehicle rose 4.9 per cent last month.
A decline in travel tours put downward pressure on the CPI in May. Smaller declines for gas and cellular services put upward pressure on the index compared with the previous month.
On an annual basis, prices for cellular services fell 5.5 per cent in May, compared with a 10.8 decline in April.
