We’re only about halfway into the forest fire season but already Newfoundland and Labrador has about triple the number of fires over last year.
There were 51 forest fires in all of 2024 but there have been over 160 so far this year.
The minister responsible for forestry, Lisa Dempster, says they are doing their best to keep ahead of the situation and she’s aware of the loss of property in the area of Chance Harbour, Bonavista Bay. Three more cabins were lost yesterday.
“Nothing can replace the loss of life but I know that some people have spent years investing in their cabins,” said Minister Dempster on Your VOCM Mornings.
The province-wide fire ban remains in effect. Dempster also has a message for people intent on flying drones to get footage of fires.
“When they’re in the sky, we can’t fly,” says the minister. “And some people complain that they can’t have a backyard fire. Let’s just ride this out for a while,” said Dempster.
