Memorial University has released more detail on spending cuts in this year’s budget.
MUN reduced spending by almost $21-million for the 2025-26 fiscal year, saying it had to go that route to ensure the long-term sustainability of the university.
President Dr. Jennifer Lokash says 20 positions—some permanent, some contractual—have been made redundant. Specifically, the operating budgets for the Harris Centre and the Office of Public Engagement on the St. John’s campus have been eliminated. The engagement office at Grenfell in Corner Brook is being maintained and will receive additional one-time funding.
MUN is also reducing expenses related to travel, materials and supplies, reducing budgets for internal funding programs, and encouraging people to retire to restructure operations. The services of the Writing Centre are being merged with other student academic services.
