Three new speed cameras are now in operation in the province which means tickets are being done up.
Two of them are operating on the Veterans Memorial and one is in place on Waterford Bridge Road at Nottingham Drive near St. Mary’s Elementary in St. John’s.
A fourth camera will be installed near the two schools on Larkhall Street in St. John’s.
The minister responsible, Sarah Stoodley, says the traffic cameras in school zones should help restore peace of mind to families and residents.
She says she was talking to a crossing guard who works in the area of an elementary school and junior high who told her “how absolutely critical this is.”
Government says the locations were chosen based on traffic data and in consultation with the capital city, the RNC, RCMP and with the company awarded the contract, Jenoptik Smart Mobility Solutions.
The rollout of speed cameras in the province will be done in phases, with the first stage consisting of 10 speed cams, including the four already announced.
The province says as the program expands, cameras will be installed in construction and school zones and certain intersections.
Devices will also be installed on school bus stop-arms to detect vehicles passing school buses that are picking up or dropping off students.
Meanwhile, Stoodley says the traffic camera on Larkhall Street will be installed in time for the start of the school year.
“The challenge with that road is that the children actually cross it numerous times a day, so that’s why I believe that one is critical.”
