Police officers are in favour of any move which adds resources and allows them to focus on more of the duties at the core of law enforcement.
The RNC are going to hire about a dozen special constables to help with some of the more routine matters such as guarding a scene and providing traffic control.
The assistants would leave core policing up to full-fledged officers, allowing them to spend more time catching the bad guys and keeping the public safe.
Staff Sgt. Mike Summers, President of the RNC Association, says they still have to work out details to division of duty, but it has been done in other jurisdictions and he sees no reason why it shouldn’t be done here.
“We’ll be having discussions with management and government on what the special constables can and cannot do.”
He sees it as an opportunity to get police officers back out on the road and responding to the more serious issues.
