Kids are heading back to school today, and that means school zones will be busy places.
Drivers are reminded that speeds are lower in school zones and that enforcement is in place, whether it’s in the form of traffic cameras or regular patrols.
With back to school also comes a reminder to drivers that the time frame for reduced speeds in school zones has been adjusted in the metro region to align with the province’s Highway Traffic Act.
School zone speed limits of 30 km/h will be enforced from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on school days, an adjustment from 7:30 in the morning in previous years.
The update has been made to align with provincial enforcement standards and because of the traffic cameras set up in some school zones.
One of the more significant safety changes this school year is the installation of traffic cameras on some school buses.
The cameras were installed to help catch drivers passing buses when the stop arm is extended, and while children are getting on or off school buses.
Six buses, which operate on a variety of routes across the province have had the cameras installed, but the plan is to expand the program even further.
