The NDP is adding to their campaign promises with hefty pledges for Memorial University.
Leader Jim Dinn says, if elected, he plans to allocate $112 million to the institution to avoid further tuition increases and provide additional funding for deferred maintenance.
Earlier this week, student groups voiced their concerns over rising tuition, calling on fellow classmates to vote only for political parties that plan to fund MUN.
Dinn says tuition is “out of reach” for many families, likening it to cutting services and hoping for success.
“It’s that whole notion that we can cut our way to success, and it has never proven to be that case, whether it’s in the public school system or in the post-secondary system,” he told reporters.
“Having the expertise, the people who are going to be the future of this province, the innovators, they need to feel that they can afford to be educated here and stay here. This is the future. Without it, we have none.”
