RCMP in Gander seized and impounded an ATV and a pickup truck, and their drivers are facing charges after the two vehicles collided on the weekend.
RCMP say the collision occurred on Joe Batts Pond Road in Gander around 6:30 Sunday evening. The pickup was found in a ditch, while the ATV had already fled the scene – last seen heading towards Gander on a local trail.
The 54-year-old driver of the pickup was not injured, and while he stayed at the scene, police noticed signs of impairment and a roadside breath test was above the provincial limit, but below the criminal threshold for impaired driving. His truck was seized and he was issued a seven-day licence suspension.
Meanwhile, a patrol officer noticed a heavily damaged ATV in the area of Magee Road and while the driver appeared to be having mechanical trouble with the machine, he was approached by the police officer on foot. The driver then sped away, showering the officer with rocks and debris.
The ATV and its driver were later found at a home in Gander. The 56-year-old man also showed signs of impairment and was arrested and provided breath samples at the detachment that were above the legal limit.
He was released to appear in court on charges of dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident, driving an off-road vehicle on a highway without a driver’s licence and driving an ATV without a helmet.
