There are a lot of people who have good reason to run or walk tomorrow.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives, but mortality from the disease has decreased by about 47 per cent since the late 1980’s.
The CIBC Run for the Cure takes place across Canada tomorrow. It’s the country’s largest single-day, volunteer-led event of the breast cancer cause.
People will gather at 8:00 am at the Bowring Park Bungalow for a few remarks and presentations followed by a warmup, and then everyone gets moving.
Run director Steffani Kulathunga says the event has raised $507-million for research and support programs since 1992. The money supports everything from prevention and diagnosis to research and treatment.
“In Newfoundland and Labrador, we have the Cancer Information Helpline, we have free breast prostheses and accessories, we have mental health programs, and accommodations for people who are going through treatment at Daffodil Place,” says Kulathunga. “One of our Participants of Hope, Danielle, said it best; she said ‘when you’re in stage IV, the only thing that encourages you is research.'”
