A former cabinet minister soon-to-be opposition member is anxious to see how the incoming government is going to fulfill all of its promises, many of which would cost a bundle.
Elvis Loveless, the MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune, welcomes some of the commitments, especially those that improve the fortunes of rural Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Premier in waiting, Tony Wakeham, has pledged to revoke the provincial government’s partnership in the Marine Protected Area off the south coast. Those in the fish farming business are worried about the impact such a designation will have on their industry, the economic mainstay of the south coast.
Wakeham has also promised to expand 24/7 snowclearing to more areas of the province.
“What’s the cost of that going to be and will more staff be required? Four new ferries to be built but there was no mention of the south coast ferry system. And cell phone service…these are promises which have large price tags, and can they be done?” he asks.
