One of the most vocal MHAs in the legislature in recent times is about to take on a new role – one which frowns on publicly engaging oneself in the political field.
Paul Lane, who just won his fifth term, will be sworn in as Speaker of the House this afternoon.
He is an independent member, which means no party affiliation. A frequent caller to VOCM Open Line, the MHA for Mount Pearl-Southlands says he can still fight for his district, but that he will have to take a different approach in doing so.
Lane, who has also sat as a Liberal and a PC, says he will be fair and impartial.
“If somebody decides they’re not going to abide by the rules, maybe I will have crack the whip from time to time,” says Lane. “But I want to have a respectful and cordial house and work with members in a positive way to bring about that decorum.”
