An American basketball player will go on trial in Newfoundland Supreme Court for alleged sexual assault.
Thirty-year-old Raekwan Holliman of Utica, N.Y., was charged after an incident at a hotel in downtown St. John’s earlier this year.
He spent a week in custody before release on conditions, with permission to return home as the case continued.
His lawyer has appeared for him on the court dates since then, including yesterday when he elected trial before a Supreme Court judge, on behalf of Holliman.
Police responded to reports of an assault at the unnamed hotel around 3 a.m. on February 28 to find a woman needing medical help.
She received assistance, and several hours later Holliman was arrested and charged with a single count of sexual assault.
He was in St. John’s with the Rochester Kingz, at the time, for games against the Newfoundland Rogues.
The case now moves to formal arraignment in Supreme Court in early December.
