Three Liberals seeking judicial recounts after the recent provincial election have filed their reasons with the Supreme Court.
Three separate applications have been filed but they all have consistent claims of inconsistencies at the ballot box.
They state special ballots with a candidate’s name circled, instead of an X in the box, were accepted one day but rejected the next. The same went for ballots where the X was on the counterfoil, or the part to be torn off.
That’s the thrust of the claims by former mayors Brian Keating, who lost by 64 votes in Placentia West-Bellevue, and Dan Bobbett who came up 102 votes short in Topsail-Paradise.
Former Speaker Derek Bennett, who lost Lewisporte-Twillingate by just 18 votes, makes the same claims but also that an error involving spoiled ballots was never explained or accounted for.
The applications are based largely on affidavits by two Liberal scrutineers and Bennett himself. Meanwhile, PC MHAs-elect Jeff Dwyer, Mark Butt and Paul Dinn sit on the sidelines pending an outcome.
The applications are scheduled to be heard in Supreme Court tomorrow morning.
