The Public Service Alliance of Canada is very concerned with cuts to the public service which Prime Minister Mark Carney says would amount to 40,000 positions over the next three years.
Regional Executive Vice-President Atlantic with the PSAC, Chris Di Liberatore, says job losses of that magnitude at a time of economic uncertainty is bad news.
“This is a time when we should be investing, and in times of economic downturn, that’s a time when you invest in public services. Because it’s those public services that help bridge that gap,” says Di Liberatore. “They help generate local economies and help keep those local economies flowing.”
He says the cuts will get in the way of being able to ‘build Canada strong’ “because they don’t have the public service workers who make the innovation possible for those projects to happen.”
Di Liberatore says it’s too early to say what the potential impact might be on this province, and the union will be seeking out more information from the federal government.
