The fisheries minister says no decisions have been made regarding the creation of a marine protected area off the south coast.
The fishing, fish farming and other industries are concerned about what kind of restrictions would be associated with such a creation.
Similar protectionist zones have been established in coastal areas over the decades, but the FFAW says the federal government will say one thing, then do another, usually to the detriment of the fishery.
Premier Tony Wakeham said on the campaign trail that he would revoke Newfoundland and Labrador’s approval of the south coast protected zone, but federal fisheries minister and St. John’s East MP Joanne Thompson says the proposal is still at the discussion stage.
She says people have to listen to each other.
