Biologists are recommending that the federal government take another look at a rebuilding plan for the south coast cod stock because the fish are fewer and smaller. However, one of the main players in the industry is saying “I told you so.”
The cod stock assessment for 3PS is at one of its lowest points ever with a biomass of about 27,000 tonnes. It has, in the past, been measured at 150,000.
DFO, much to the dismay of the fisheries union, gave offshore draggers a percentage of the quota a couple of years ago. Now, the percentage of the stock being found in inshore waters has gone from 10 per cent to 40 per cent.
The FFAW attributes the failure of the rebuilding plan to mismanagement, especially the decision to allow offshore draggers in.
Meanwhile, the Atlantic Groundfish Council, which represents the offshore sector, says they are committed to the long-term sustainability of the stock.
He notes that their sector is promoting growth by coordinating a fishery improvement project specific to 3PS.
