Video of various police operations captured by the public and posted online pose a number of difficulties, not just for officers but for the public as well.
That’s according to the RNC which is urging people to think before they post.
RNC Constable Steph Myers says not all police operations are criminal in nature, and in some cases a person might be taken into custody or questioned, but no charges are laid.
“Be mindful of what you’re posting,” says Myers, “is there a public safety concern? Is there an officer safety concern? Primarily, not everyone is a criminal…we don’t want to falsely publicly accuse people of these crimes when they’re not necessarily involved. Sometimes being in handcuffs, being in the back of a police car…that doesn’t mean that someone is guilty, it doesn’t mean they’re being charged. we have a lot of police techniques and tactics that we use that don’t often necessarily mean criminal(ity).”
Myers says it’s important not to spread misinformation, and they don’t want to risk the safety of officers.
She says live-streaming certain police operations could jeopardize officer safety by giving away their location.
