Opposition Leader John Hogan says suggestions that any potential changes to the MOU will result in adjustments made by Quebec are concerning.
John Hogan says he remains very worried about the future of the potential hydro agreement with Quebec given the premier’s non-committal stance on the proposed project.
Yesterday, Quebec energy minister Christine Fréchette told reporters in St. John’s that any changes to the MOU sought by NL will be met with changes on Quebec’s side.
Hogan used the provision that Hydro Quebec lead project development at Gull Island as an example. He says if that changes, it could have significant implications for Newfoundland and Labrador.
“I don’t know if NL Hydro has the capability and the capacity to take on that lead right now. But if we give that up, I’m sure that what she’s saying is that Hydro Quebec will then not want to take on the risks of any cost overruns for that project in the future, so that will then be borne by Newfoundland and Labrador which will then diminish the value in the amount of dollars that we’ll get for that project.”
