An American hurricane expert who studied at MUN says Hurricane Melissa produced the highest ever wind gusts on record.
The storm, which struck Jamaica at the end of October as a Category 5 storm, produced a wind gust reading of 252 miles per hour. That’s more than 400 km/h.
Dr. Athena Masson says the wind gust was recorded by a Hurricane Hunter dropsonde at 657 feet above sea level.
It breaks the previous record of 248 miles per hour recorded from Typhoon Megi in 2010.
