Women and girls who died as the result of gender-based violence were remembered at Confederation Building yesterday during a Purple Ribbon flag-raising event to mark the start of the 16 days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Flowers were laid along a wall of 14 banners in the main lobby of Confederation Building – each banner remembering and celebrating the lives of victims.
Family members shared stories of loved ones lost – among them was Lisa Lake, the mother of Cortney Lake, who was last seen when she was picked up by a former boyfriend on June 7th 2017.
RNC say she was murdered, but her remains have never been recovered.
Lake described her daughter as someone who had dreams for the future, but never had the chance.
“The anguish for our family is still ongoing. We live with the reality that Cortney’s remains have not yet been found. She deserves the dignity of her final resting place, not a place where her murderer decided to dispose of her body.”
