Promises made by Premier Tony Wakeham were top of mind during the Canadian Federation of Students NL AGM over the weekend.
Chairperson Nicolas Keough, who has been elected for another term, says Wakeham’s promises for tuition refunds to post-secondary graduates who work and stay in the province, and paid work terms for nursing, social work, pharmacy, and education students were a big topic of conversation.
Keough agrees that students are feeling optimistic, but notes that promises have been made, and not kept, to students before, and it is important to keep government’s feet to the fire.
Keough says he has spoken with Education Minister Paul Dinn through email, and is in the process for setting up an in-person meeting with him to discuss a reduction in tuition, increases in funding to MUN and CNA, and in general more collaboration between government and students.
