Ottawa is providing a breakdown on tax revenue collected through cannabis sales since legalization in 2018.
The federal and provincial governments have raked in more than $5.4 billion in tax revenue from marijuana sales as of August 31, 2025.
Ottawa collected $1.2 billion, while the rest was spread through the provinces and territories – with the exception of Manitoba which does not take part in the feds’ cannabis taxation framework.
Ontario took the lion’s share of $1.5 billion. Despite having a third of Ontario’s population, Alberta was second – bringing in over $1 billion in tax revenue.
Newfoundland and Labrador has collected over 62.5 million in tax dollars since legalization.
Meanwhile, Health Canada has spent roughly $21.6 million on education and prevention campaigns related to the use of commercial cannabis.
A breakdown of cannabis tax revenue and expenditures was provided in response to a written question from Quebec MP Luc Berthold.
