For families going through a separation or divorce, conflict resolution can be challenging, but one organization is highlighting ways people can settle those differences without having to head to the courtroom.
This is Family Dispute Resolution Week.
Rhona Buchan, board chair of the Family Dispute Resolution Institute Atlantic, says going through something like mediation, as opposed to court, can be “so much better” for children that are involved in the situation.
She says children are “extremely attuned” to their parents’ communication, whether the issues are talked about directly in front of them or not.
She says when parents can settle their differences and find a way forward, children can “feel at peace” and not have to worry about what happens next.
Buchan says the “greatest gift” people can give their children during a divorce is the ability to be together in the same room with the other parent.
…especially for big family events like birthdays, weddings, births, and christenings.
