A 23-year-old Stephenville Crossing man has been arrested and charged with robbery, vehicle theft, assaulting a police officer and numerous other offences following a series of events in St. George’s last week.
Bay St. George RCMP were called shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 27, about a robbery and theft of a vehicle from the main road in St. George’s.
Police say a woman confronted a man who she noticed in the bed of her pickup. Two neighbours who were searching for the same man they suspected of trying to steal an off-road vehicle intervened to help the woman and de-escalate the situation.
RCMP say one of the men was assaulted by the suspect who then fled the area in the stolen truck.
Both men were struck by the vehicle – one of whom was dragged for a distance. They were treated in hospital and are recovering at home.
The stolen pickup off the road (RCMP)Police were then called after the stolen pickup crashed on Brook Street in Stephenville Crossing a short time later.
Twenty-three-year-old Stefan King, who was located in a nearby home, refused to comply with police demands, and was taken into custody following a struggle with police and use of a taser.
King was remanded to custody pending his next court appearance next Monday.
