About 17 cm of snow is on the ground in metro, eastern Newfoundland and central as the first winter storm passes over the island.
The snow has turned to a wet mixture on much of the Avalon but the snow is persisting in most areas off the Avalon. The rain will turn back to light snow in metro tonight.
The brunt of the storm is being felt in Clarenville, Terra Nova National Park and on the Bonavista Peninsula where some of the highest snowfall amounts are beong recorded.
Travel is not recommended between Clarenville and the east entrance to Terra Nova National Park, parts of the Bonavista Peninsula Highway and the Eastport area. Highway crews recommend that people stay off the Conception Bay North Shore between Old Perlican and Perry’s Cove and on the Trinity Bay side from Brownsdale to Old Perlican.
Corporal Kurt Russell of the RCMP says posted speed limits are for ideal driving conditions.
He says in times like this, drivers should forget about the posted speed limit and use road conditions as the guide.
“Once road conditions start to deteriorate, you have to slow down whether it’s because of water, snow slush or ice,” says Cpl. Russell. “Once you go into a skid, then you lose control.”
