The City of St. John’s has officially cut the ribbon on the new Mews Centre, which opened to the public in September.

Children from nearby St. Teresa’s Elementary, many of whom make use of the facility every week, sang to begin and end the event.
Representatives from the city, the province, and the federal government were in attendance, and well as descendants of the facility’s namesake.
Henry George Reginald Mews, better known as Harry, was born in 1897.
He served on St. John’s city council for 22 years – 16 of them as mayor from 1949 to 1965.
He passed away in 1982.
Mews’ granddaughter, Heather Hickman, says the family is pleased to see the city carry his name over to the new facility.
“Our grandfather would be so delighted with this new community centre, and honoured to have his name associated with it. He loved and supported all manner of sports and recreation.”
