The final weeks before Christmas are prime time for so-called “porch pirates,” but the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says there are steps people can take to keep their packages safe.
The term refers to thieves who steal packages left at people’s doorsteps.
To avoid having property stolen, the RNC encourages people to use delivery tracking and alerts, including text or email notifications, so that they know when their package has arrived.
Another option is to choose a secure delivery location, such as a person’s work or a friend’s house, where they know someone will be there to receive the package.
Police also suggest requesting a signature upon delivery – especially for valuable items, scheduling deliveries, asking a trusted neighbor to watch for the package, and using a doorbell camera.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to contact the RNC.
