A recent advisory for people to get vaccinated for the flu prior to the Christmas holidays has been met with increased bookings for the shot.
The flu is on the rise in this province with five people in hospital – one of whom is in critical condition.
A particularly virulent strain of Influenza A has resulted in a greater number of hospitalizations and complications in provinces like Ontario, where three children have died.
An appeal by Dr. Janice Fitzgerald for people to get vaccinated prior to the holidays appears to be resonating.
Pharmacies have already reported a surge in the number of patients booking their flu shot, while provincially-run flu vaccine clinics are also reporting an increase in bookings.
Dr. Ashley Waghmare of the NL Pharmacy Association says booking or calling ahead is essential.
With the push on for children to get vaccinated, Waghmare says it’s important to check with your pharmacy to see if they’re able to accommodate children of certain age ranges.
