Premier Tony Wakeham says he is “more than willing” to sign on to a national Pharmacare agreement with Ottawa.
The federal legislation for the program passed in October of 2024. Once a province signs on, it will receive funding so that people with an MCP card can receive prescription contraceptives and diabetes medications and devices without having to pay out of pocket.
The former Liberal government faced calls, from the NDP in particular, to sign on to the program but a deal was never reached.
Wakeham says he is “absolutely” interested in a Pharmacare agreement.
“Unfortunately, the program was introduced (and) a number of provinces were able to take advantage of it. I’m not sure why the Liberal government in our province didn’t sign up originally, but I am more than prepared to sign up for it whenever that opportunity comes.”
