The deputy mayor of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove welcomes visitors and residents alike to take in the beauty of the town’s beaches and coastline, but cautions that Mother Nature has a mind of her own.
Lynn Palfrey and her son experienced nature’s wrath after visiting the beach last Sunday.
A so-called sneaker wave came upon them suddenly, knocking them off their feet and pulling them into the ocean.
Were it not for the actions of Emily Barbour and Stephen Browne, who were nearby and grabbed them from the water, Palfrey shudders to think what might have happened.
Deputy Mayor Shannon Power says he’s thankful no-one was seriously hurt.
He says signs have been posted throughout the town warning people of the dangers of the coastline.
“It seems such events have gotten a little bit more common over the past few years,” says Power of weather and wave related incidents. “We’ve had a few reports over the past couple of years of people being knocked down by these waves…we have to realize we are at the whim of Mother Nature.”
