The Minister of Health has another duty added to her already lengthy set of responsibilities.
Lela Evans was officially sworn-in as the minister responsible for Women and Gender Equality yesterday.
The portfolios on Evans’ desk also include Health and Community Services, Mental Health and Addictions, Minister Responsible for NL Health Services, Labrador Affairs, and Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.
Government says it recognizes that gender-based violence is both a safety and health issue and the change will help to strengthen supports for those affected. Government believes that the change will help to ensure prevention, intervention, trauma-informed care and support for long-term recovery.
The provincial government says adding Women and Gender Equality to Evans’ duties will support closer alignment with frontline services and the supports people rely on every day.
