Newfoundland and Labrador is going to experience one of the other extremes of winter this week – cold.
The metro region is dealing with its snowiest winter in decades but this week, the entire province will experience varying degrees of a cold snap.
It has been a challenging winter, at times, for Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, which manufactures about 90 per cent of the electricity consumed. In January, a blockage of intake pipes at Bay d’Espoir caused by frazzle ice during a cold spell left the system near maximum capacity. Newfoundland Power did not have to resort to rotating blackouts.
On Friday, about 129,000 customers went offline for a short time because of an issue on the Maritime Link.
Rob Collett, vice-president at Hydro, says they are not expecting problems meeting demand.
He notes that all of their generation is available, and they’re quite comfortable heading into the cold snap this week.
